Intensive preparations are underway at the Port of Klaipėda for the first green hydrogen production and refueling station in the Baltic States. MT Group, a leading energy infrastructure developer, has selected Lithuanian company Nord Steel to manufacture and supply advanced hydrogen storage tanks, a contract valued at €1.4 million.
Key Project Details
Nord Steel will design, manufacture, and deliver three high-pressure green hydrogen storage tanks: a 40-bar buffer tank and two tanks with 550 and 1000-bar pressure capacities. These tanks will be crucial in supporting the hydrogen production and refueling operations at the Klaipėda facility.
Strategic Importance
The project represents a significant investment in sustainable infrastructure, aiming to establish Klaipėda as a hub for green hydrogen technology in the region. Algis Latakas, General Director of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, highlighted the project’s role in modernizing the port and contributing to a cleaner and more innovative transport and industrial ecosystem.
Collaborative Efforts and Expertise
MT Group and Nord Steel bring extensive experience in energy and industrial projects across Europe. According to Mindaugas Zakaras, CEO of MT Group, this initiative will enhance Lithuania’s industrial competence and export capabilities, positioning the country as a leader in green hydrogen technology.
Remigijus Kurgonas, CEO of Nord Steel, emphasized the project’s potential to set a regional benchmark for green hydrogen facilities, with a strong focus on safety and quality.
Future Prospects
Set to produce around 500 kg of hydrogen daily, the Klaipėda station is expected to become a catalyst for further development of green hydrogen technologies in Lithuania and the wider Baltic region. This project aligns with global efforts to decarbonize transport and power sectors, contributing to sustainable energy solutions.
