MT Group has signed a €10 million full-scope EPC contract to build the first green hydrogen production facility in Vilnius, strengthening its position as a key player in the European hydrogen infrastructure sector. The deal, finalized on April 29 with Vilnius City Municipality and Vilnius Heat Networks, marks a strategic step for the contractor as well as a milestone for Lithuania’s capital.

3MW Plant to Fuel Public Transport and Cut Emissions

The 3MW facility will produce up to 3.45 million cubic meters of green hydrogen annually using water and electricity from renewable sources. The hydrogen will power 16 public buses, replacing diesel units and cutting an estimated 1,414 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2026.

MT Group will deliver the full scope of the project—from engineering and procurement to construction—demonstrating its end-to-end capabilities in clean energy infrastructure.

“Benchmark for Urban Hydrogen Solutions”

“This project represents a pivotal milestone – it proves how strategic goals and a clear political vision can materialize into real, functional infrastructure,” said MT Group CEO Mindaugas Zakaras. “The plant in Vilnius will meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and technological efficiency. We believe it will become a benchmark for urban hydrogen solutions for the whole region.”

Zakaras added that the company’s collaboration with Vilnius Heat Networks will be key to delivering the project on time and on budget. “We are confident in this project’s success and believe that close collaboration with the skilled team at Vilnius Heat Networks will allow us to achieve even the most ambitious goals,” he said.

Funding Structure Reflects Broader European Support

Up to 70% of the project’s financing will come from EU structural funds, with the remainder provided by the Vilnius City Municipality. The funding model reflects broader European support for hydrogen as a critical tool for decarbonization and energy independence.

MT Group Expands Hydrogen Portfolio Across Europe

The Vilnius project adds to MT Group’s growing hydrogen portfolio, which includes work on the Green Energy Park—one of the world’s largest green hydrogen initiatives. The company is increasingly active in hydrogen, renewable energy, and carbon capture infrastructure across the continent.
