Mabanaft is set to develop a hydrogen refueling station for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in Lübeck. The station, designed by Hypion GmbH, will have a daily capacity of 2,000 kilograms and is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

Located near the A1 and A20 motorways, the station will be integrated into Mabanaft’s Staack Pooltankstellen network. It will cater specifically to HGVs, refueling up to 50 trucks per day. Construction applications have been submitted, with work scheduled to start in the second half of this year.

Government Support and Industry Vision

The project has received €5.1 million in funding from the German government’s Climate-Friendly Commercial Vehicles and Infrastructure (KsNI) programme. The initiative aims to expand hydrogen and fuel cell technology, particularly in commercial transport.

Mabanaft is committed to a multi-fuel strategy. “We’re convinced of the multi-fuel approach, and the idea that different fuel solutions can accelerate the energy transition,” said Volker Ebeling, Senior Vice President New Energy, Supply & Infrastructure at Mabanaft. Florian Lückmann, Head of Commercial Road Transport, emphasized hydrogen’s potential for long-haul transport, noting its refueling times and payload capacities are comparable to diesel, with a range of up to 800 kilometers per tank.

Part of a Growing Hydrogen Network

The station will be operated within the tankpool24 network, which includes over 2,000 refueling stations across Europe. Mabanaft, the largest shareholder in tankpool24, has already built two hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden through its subsidiary PS Energi and has secured funding for three more.

The project aligns with the EU’s Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which requires hydrogen refuelling stations every 200 km along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) by 2030. Mabanaft is focusing on hydrogen stations designed for the performance and accessibility needs of heavy transport.
