Lhyfe, French renewable hydrogen producer, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy leader, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to explore joint opportunities in large-scale green hydrogen production projects across Europe. The MoU was signed during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025, marking a significant step in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions and the decarbonization of industry.

Ambitious Renewable Energy Goals

The partnership aligns with Masdar’s ambitious goal to achieve a renewable energy portfolio of 100 GW by 2030. This supports the UAE Consensus target to triple global renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade. As part of this strategy, Masdar aims to become a leading producer of green hydrogen, targeting a production capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum globally within the next ten years.

Lhyfe’s Rapid Growth and Proven Capacity

Lhyfe, established in 2019, has rapidly emerged as a key player in the green hydrogen sector. The company operates four production sites in Europe and has several others under construction. Lhyfe’s project pipeline represents a total installed capacity of 9.5 GW, including several large-scale projects at advanced stages. This track record of industrial capacity and innovation in green hydrogen production was a critical factor in Masdar’s decision to collaborate with Lhyfe.

Strategic Collaboration for Green Hydrogen

The MoU sets the stage for both companies to explore co-development opportunities. Masdar’s expertise in renewable energy projects and Lhyfe’s proven capabilities in green hydrogen production create a robust foundation for advancing the green hydrogen value chain. This collaboration aims to accelerate the deployment of large-scale green hydrogen sites, which are crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting global sustainability goals.

Leaders Speak on the Partnership

Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Chief Green Hydrogen Officer at Masdar, highlighted the importance of this partnership. “Masdar is committed to advancing the development of green hydrogen around the world, and we believe Europe will be a significant player in the future green hydrogen sector. This collaboration with Lhyfe will enable us to leverage our shared expertise and resources to explore pathways to accelerating development and potentially supporting our ambitious growth plans,” he said.

Matthieu Guesné, Founder and CEO of Lhyfe, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the mutual ambition to decarbonize industry on a massive scale. “Masdar is one of the most important developers of renewable energies, with real expertise on green hydrogen and a strong lead in terms of deployment. By combining our complementary expertise, we want to accelerate the deployment of large sites, which have the capacity to make a difference on greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

Recent Developments and Future Prospects

This partnership comes on the heels of significant developments for both companies. In 2024, Masdar signed agreements with Norwegian firms to explore clean energy opportunities, focusing on green hydrogen. Meanwhile, Lhyfe secured a €149 million grant for a green hydrogen plant in France, unveiled plans for its first UK hydrogen plant, and commenced construction of a facility in Germany.
