In a significant move towards sustainable logistics, German automotive technology firm KEYOU handed over its first 18-ton hydrogen-powered truck to EP Trans. The event took place at the Hydrogen Dialogue in Nuremberg, with Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger, present to witness the milestone.

The truck, based on a Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis, features a 7.8-liter Deutz six-cylinder engine converted to run on hydrogen. This innovative vehicle, boasting an output of 210 kW, will soon operate on a route in Bavaria for an international steel company. Initially planned for delivery in late 2023, the handover faced delays due to supply chain issues but is now set for early 2025.

Integration and Assembly

Paul Nutzfahrzeuge, KEYOU’s long-term partner, was responsible for the truck’s assembly. This specialized vehicle conversion company previously constructed KEYOU’s prototype vehicles, including a 12-meter city bus and an 18-ton truck. After completing integration and final optimizations, the hydrogen truck is now ready for road approval.

Christian Bock, Area Sales Manager at Allison Transmission, highlighted the importance of the Allison 3000 R transmission system. “It not only enhances drivability and acceleration but also improves energy efficiency and range,” he said.

A Step Towards Decarbonization

EP Trans’ Managing Director, Markus Pumpf, expressed enthusiasm for the hydrogen technology, stating, “Electric trucks were not viable for our needs. KEYOU’s solution allows us to deliver emission-free without sacrificing range or efficiency.” Co-managing director Georg Ehrlinger added, “The hydrogen engine’s reliability and zero-emission benefits align perfectly with our sustainability goals.”

The hydrogen truck is expected to offer efficiencies up to 45%, outperforming modern diesel engines while reducing CO2 emissions by 99.7%. This marks a crucial step in decarbonizing EP Trans’ fleet and the supply chain of its clients.

Looking Ahead: The 40-Ton Hydrogen Truck

Following the successful launch of the 18-ton truck, KEYOU is shifting its focus to the 40-ton hydrogen truck. This new model is expected to enter production in 2026. This vehicle will feature a 12.8-liter engine with an output of 346 kW and hydrogen tanks designed for a range of approximately 650 kilometers. Similar to the 18-ton truck, it will contain 350 bar hydrogen cylinders.

The transition towards hydrogen technology highlights KEYOU’s commitment to sustainable innovation. As these trucks roll out, they promise to redefine the logistics industry, offering a greener alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles.
