Kiel-based hydrogen project developer Hypion and hydrogen engine specialist KEYOU are collaborating to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty transport. By combining Hypion’s green hydrogen infrastructure with KEYOU’s pay-per-use 40-ton truck, the partnership provides a cost-effective and practical solution for logistics companies aiming to decarbonize their fleets.
Hypion’s Role in Hydrogen Infrastructure
Hypion is playing a key role in establishing green hydrogen infrastructure in Northern Germany. The company develops, invests in, and operates hydrogen projects, ensuring a reliable supply for commercial transport. In 2023, Hypion launched the first hydrogen filling station in Neumünster, Schleswig-Holstein, capable of supplying up to two tons of green hydrogen per day. Optimized for heavy commercial vehicles, the station forms part of a larger hydrogen hub aligned with the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), supporting the transition to zero-emission transport.
KEYOU’s Hydrogen Trucks and Mobility Model
KEYOU aims to solve the “chicken-and-egg” problem of hydrogen mobility by deploying trucks where hydrogen supply is already available. The company’s “H2 Mobility as a Service” model includes a zero-emission 40-ton truck powered by a hydrogen engine, along with service and maintenance, 24/7 breakdown assistance, comprehensive insurance, and fuel. This package allows transport companies to transition smoothly to hydrogen technology with minimal financial risk.
To ensure cost-effectiveness, KEYOU and Hypion have agreed to supply green hydrogen at attractive prices, enabling customers to benefit from lower fuel costs and toll savings of up to €30,000 per year. The partnership ensures sufficient utilization of the Neumünster hydrogen station, contributing to the establishment of a predictable and reliable hydrogen ecosystem.
Driving Sustainable Heavy Transport
“What we share with KEYOU is the strong conviction that green hydrogen will play a key role in the decarbonization of heavy-duty transportation,” said Dr. Stefan Rehm, Managing Director of Hypion. “By joining forces, we can advance this technology and provide transport companies with a viable path toward zero-emission logistics.”
Pedro Bravo, CSO of KEYOU, added, “Our cooperation with Hypion makes our offer even more attractive and extends it to customers in Schleswig-Holstein. Decarbonizing heavy transport requires both vehicle technology and accessible hydrogen infrastructure. Every partnership with hydrogen producers and filling station operators brings us closer to making hydrogen a real alternative to diesel.”
Future Prospects
With sales of the KEYOU 40-ton truck now underway and a hydrogen-powered semitrailer tractor set to launch in 2026, the collaboration represents a significant step in sustainable heavy transport. The initiative not only provides immediate economic benefits but also lays the groundwork for long-term hydrogen adoption in the logistics sector.
