A hydrogen fuel-cell coach built by Irizar and powered by a Bosch 190-kilowatt fuel-cell module has entered passenger service in Madrid, with the manufacturers citing a range exceeding 1,000 km — a level that would surpass the previous commercial benchmark.

EU Emissions Rules Push Operators Toward Zero-Emission Coaches

The deployment lands as European transit operators face tightening decarbonisation targets, sharpening the competition between hydrogen fuel cells and battery-electric drivetrains for buses and coaches that cover long distances daily. EU rules require newly registered city buses to cut carbon emissions 90 percent by 2030 against a 2019 baseline, with the requirement extending to other bus categories from 2040, pushing operators toward zero-emission options as diesel fleets face additional urban air-quality restrictions.

Alsa and CRTM Oversee Irizar i6S Efficient H2 FCEV Rollout

The coach, Irizar’s second-generation i6S Efficient H2 FCEV, is being run by Spanish operator Alsa under oversight from Madrid’s regional transport authority, CRTM. Irizar said the vehicle has operated on both intercity and long-distance routes since June, carrying a 190-kilowatt Bosch hydrogen fuel cell paired with an electric propulsion system, refuelling in roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Irizar said the coach “maintains performance and commercial attributes equivalent to those of diesel vehicles,” and confirmed the model is scheduled for production availability in the first half of 2027. Bosch, which described the deployment as its first customer project in the bus segment, said the trial is expected to run several weeks and has not published a certified range figure to substantiate the 1,000 km claim.

Range Claim Would Overtake Hyundai’s Universe FCEV Benchmark

If confirmed, the range would exceed the 960.4 km certified maximum of Hyundai’s Universe FCEV, previously the longest-range hydrogen bus in commercial operation. Thomas Pauer, a member of the Bosch Mobility sector board and president of Bosch Power Solutions, said fuel cells suit buses that “travel longer distances every day and rarely have the opportunity to charge en route,” adding that the trial demonstrates the technology is ready for large-scale deployment in passenger transport. The C190 module sits between Bosch’s C300, aimed at heavy-duty coaches and trucks, and the 100-kilowatt C100 designed for city buses.

The Madrid coach fits into a broader Bosch hydrogen effort spanning production and propulsion, including the Hybrion PEM electrolysis stack launched in 2025 and hydrogen engine components for port and direct injection systems. A separate Bosch fuel-cell development team won the German Future Prize, the federal president’s technology award, at the end of 2025. Across the EU, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association recorded just over 38,000 new bus registrations in 2025, indicating the scale of the market that zero-emission technologies are competing to capture.

What the Madrid Trial Means for Operators and Investors

For operators and policymakers, the Madrid trial offers evidence that fuel-cell coaches can match diesel-equivalent range and refuelling times on long-distance routes where battery-electric buses face charging constraints. Investors will likely look for certified range and cost data before treating the 1,000 km figure as established. The 2027 production timeline will also test whether hydrogen coach costs can approach diesel parity as EU emissions deadlines approach.
