A new hydrogen refueling station has been launched at the depot of rnv, Mannheim’s public transport operator, marking a significant step forward in Germany’s shift toward cleaner, hydrogen-powered public transport. Built and operated by H2Mobility, the station will serve both public and fleet vehicles, particularly supporting rnv’s fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses. This is part of a broader push in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region to incorporate hydrogen technology into its transportation network and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
This refueling station will power 13 H2-eCitaro hydrogen buses that have already begun running in Heidelberg and are now expanding to Mannheim. These vehicles are part of the wider H2-Rhein-Neckar project, an initiative funded by the Baden-Württemberg state government to promote hydrogen technologies. The buses have been praised for their ability to cover longer, more demanding routes, offering a practical alternative to regular electric buses. This combination of hydrogen and battery-powered vehicles is crucial to Mannheim’s plans to phase out diesel entirely from its public transport system.
A Regional Vision for Hydrogen Mobility
The H2-Rhein-Neckar project is central to the Rhine-Neckar region’s ambitions to become a leader in sustainable mobility. According to Martin Jüngel, Managing Director of H2Mobility, the availability of hydrogen refueling infrastructure is growing rapidly in the area. “In the region, hydrogen is already being used in public transport and by municipal companies,” Jüngel noted, pointing out that buses and refuse trucks are already running on hydrogen, proving its viability as a day-to-day fuel source.
Mannheim’s new station offers both 350 and 700-bar refueling options, meaning it can service a range of vehicles from passenger cars to heavy-duty trucks and buses. This versatility is essential as the city and region look to expand hydrogen’s role across all forms of transport. In addition to the 13 buses already in operation, rnv plans to roll out an additional 40 hydrogen-powered buses in Mannheim and Heidelberg in the near future.
A Step Toward Fossil Fuel Independence
Mannheim’s move toward hydrogen fits within a larger trend in Germany, where hydrogen is seen as a key component in decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to electrify. Public transport, with its predictable routes and refueling needs, is a natural fit for hydrogen adoption. Hydrogen buses offer a range and refueling speed that traditional electric buses struggle to match, particularly on longer or more demanding routes.
Christian Specht, Mayor of Mannheim and Chairman of rnv’s Supervisory Board, emphasized the importance of these hydrogen initiatives. “Projects like H2Rhein-Neckar and H2Rivers are key to making Mannheim and the region fit for the future and independent of fossil fuels,” he said at the launch of the station.
These efforts also align with Germany’s broader goals under its National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to make the country a leader in hydrogen production and use, helping to meet the EU’s decarbonization targets. With financial backing from the Baden-Württemberg state and European green energy initiatives, the success of Mannheim’s hydrogen bus fleet could serve as a model for other cities across Europe.

Mannheim’s hydrogen station and the growing fleet of hydrogen buses demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a reliable and scalable alternative to diesel.
