HRS, the leading French hydrogen refueling station builder, has secured a major order for what will be Europe’s largest high-capacity hydrogen station dedicated to public transport. Capable of compressing 4 tons of hydrogen per day (160 kg per hour), the station is set to go live in early 2026 in a major European city. While the location and buyer remain undisclosed, HRS describes the client as a “major player in the sector” that selected the company after a competitive bidding process.

Scaling Up Hydrogen Public Transport

The installation is designed to support what is expected to be Europe’s largest hydrogen-powered public transport fleet. Featuring six distribution terminals, the system will ensure a steady supply of hydrogen, reinforcing HRS’s leadership in heavy-duty hydrogen refueling.

Public transport is becoming a key sector for hydrogen, especially where battery-electric buses struggle with range and charging limitations. While hydrogen buses still make up a small portion of Europe’s zero-emission fleet, demand is rising as operators look for solutions that can handle long routes with minimal downtime. The new station will support continuous daily refueling, keeping buses on the road with little delay.

A Milestone for HRS and Hydrogen Mobility

HRS CEO Hassen Rachedi called the project a milestone for both the company and the broader hydrogen mobility sector. “This recognition from a major player for this ambitious project is a validation of our constant efforts to meet the challenges of the energy transition,” he said.

HRS says the order highlights the growing demand for large-scale hydrogen refueling as cities move to cut emissions from bus networks. The company expects the project to show that hydrogen can reliably power large fleets and open new opportunities in the market.
