Norwegian companies Höegh Evi and North Ammonia have entered a strategic partnership to establish a clean ammonia supply chain from Norway to Europe. The agreement aims to leverage Norway’s renewable resources to produce green ammonia, which will serve as an efficient carrier for hydrogen transport to industrial users across Europe.
Infrastructure Development and Key Technologies
The collaboration will focus on developing scalable infrastructure to support the growing demand for hydrogen. Höegh Evi is advancing floating import terminals and an ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking technology, developed with Wärtsilä and other partners, to enable hydrogen conversion at the point of use. Meanwhile, North Ammonia is building infrastructure for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) ammonia supply, with an emphasis on maritime transport and industrial applications.
Key Projects and Market Expansion
North Ammonia is working on a green ammonia production facility at Fjord Base, which will benefit from its strategic maritime location and access to locally produced green fuels. Höegh Evi is also collaborating with the French port of Port-La Nouvelle to develop a floating hydrogen import terminal, which will play a crucial role in facilitating large-scale hydrogen imports into Europe.
Industry Leaders on the Partnership
Mikkel Tørud, CEO of North Ammonia, emphasized ammonia’s role as a versatile energy carrier: “We actively develop infrastructure for RFNBO ammonia supply to the maritime industry, and with Höegh Evi’s solutions, we can expand our reach and bring hydrogen to industrial users across Europe.”
Nils Jakob Hasle, EVP Clean Energy at Höegh Evi, highlighted hydrogen’s role in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors: “By combining North Ammonia’s production capabilities with our marine infrastructure expertise, we will develop the necessary infrastructure to connect Norwegian renewable resources with Europe’s growing clean hydrogen market.”
