Brittany has granted €1.5 million to Green Navy for its hydrogen-powered catamaran project, PROMETEO. This funding supports the region’s plan to reduce emissions in maritime transport and expand renewable hydrogen use.

PROMETEO: A Zero-Emission Solution

Green Navy is building the catamaran at its facility in La Forêt-Fouesnant. PROMETEO features electric motors powered by batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. Its propulsion system combines energy from buffer storage batteries with hydrogen-fueled fuel cells, which convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity to recharge the batteries. This design allows the vessel to run without noise, harmful emissions, or vibrations. It also provides longer travel ranges and faster docking.

Versatile Applications for Coastal Transport

The vessel will transport passengers for inter-island routes, urban bay crossings, and leisure trips. Initially, it will be offered as a bare-boat charter solution. In the future, public authorities or shipowners may purchase it.

Driving Innovation in Brittany

“PROMETEO meets three objectives outlined in Brittany’s roadmap: decarbonizing maritime transport, developing energy transition-related economic sectors, and adapting mobility solutions to address climate change,” said Charles Cardi, CEO of Green Navy. He added that the financial support strengthens the company’s connection to Brittany’s growing maritime sector.

Testing and Future Plans

Green Navy leads every phase of the project, from design to testing. The company will evaluate the vessel in real-world conditions, gathering data to help other hydrogen projects in the region.

PROMETEO will debut at the Hyvolution trade show in Paris from January 28–30, 2025. The event will showcase its potential to advance clean energy in maritime transport.
