Everfuel A/S has produced and delivered hydrogen from its HySynergy 20MW project in Denmark to Crossbridge Energy Fredericia A/S. This is an important step in the project’s development and the wider push for green hydrogen in industrial applications. The hydrogen will help decarbonize operations at Crossbridge Energy’s refinery, which processes crude oil into fuels for shipping, transportation, and aviation, and also provides heat for district heating.

Scaling Up Green Hydrogen Production

The HySynergy facility is next to Crossbridge Energy’s Fredericia refinery and plays a key role in Everfuel’s plan to increase green hydrogen production. Jacob Krogsgaard, Founder and CEO of Everfuel, said, “The first production and delivery of hydrogen to the refinery is a big milestone for Everfuel and Crossbridge Energy, bringing us closer to our goal of a sustainable hydrogen economy. It’s been a long journey, but we are now in a position to steadily increase production. I thank all our partners, stakeholders, and employees who helped make this happen.”

Regulatory Support Needed for Green Hydrogen Expansion

Finn Schousboe, CEO of Crossbridge Energy, highlighted the importance of the achievement, stating, “With hydrogen flowing from HySynergy to Crossbridge Energy, we mark the beginning of a new era. This new era depends on legislation recognizing that using green hydrogen instead of traditional hydrogen helps meet current fuel displacement requirements in Denmark. We expect green hydrogen to not just add cost but to kickstart large-scale production in the transport sector.”

Project Collaboration and Future Plans

HySynergy is a partnership between Everfuel and Crossbridge Energy, with district heating operator TVIS taking the surplus heat. The project is co-owned with Hy24, a financer managing the world’s largest hydrogen infrastructure fund. Everfuel owns 51% and Hy24 owns 49%.

Despite delays due to quality issues with high-pressure fittings in the electrolyser’s auxiliary system, Everfuel is committed to ramping up production. After a failed test on February 29, 2024, the main electrolyser facility is now expected to be ready by mid-Q2 2024 following an on-site rebuild.

Everfuel and Crossbridge Energy plan to continue optimizing operations and will hold an official inauguration event later this year for stakeholders, partners, and media. The HySynergy I project has received EUR 6.5 million in support from the Danish Energy Agency and EUR 3.8 million in co-funding from the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility.
