EDEKA Nord has launched its first two green hydrogen-powered trucks, a step forward in sustainable logistics. These Hyundai XCient Fuel Cell trucks are now delivering goods, offering a cleaner alternative to diesel trucks.
Testing Hydrogen in Daily Operations
The company will monitor the performance of these trucks over the coming months, focusing on range, efficiency, and hydrogen refueling infrastructure. With a range of up to 400 km, these vehicles could help reduce emissions while maintaining efficiency.
“Sustainability is a key part of our corporate strategy, and this milestone shows our commitment to a greener future,” said Frank Breuer, Managing Director of EDEKA Nord.
Expanding Sustainable Transport
EDEKA Nord is working on multiple sustainability measures, including energy-efficient warehouses, sustainable packaging, and regional supply chains. The company has also switched its entire truck fleet to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) diesel, further cutting CO₂ emissions.
“The logistics sector must find new ways to meet climate goals. Using hydrogen trucks is an important step in making transportation more sustainable,” said Klas Mahlstedt, Head of Logistics at EDEKA Nord.
A Model for the Industry
By adding hydrogen-powered trucks, EDEKA Nord is proving that sustainable logistics is achievable. If the pilot project succeeds, it could encourage wider use of hydrogen trucks across the retail sector, setting an example for other major distributors in Germany and beyond.
