Juma Al Majid Co. LLC, the exclusive distributor for Hyundai in the UAE, has delivered two hydrogen-powered buses to Abu Dhabi’s public transport system. The Hyundai Elec City FC and Universe FC buses are now operational, marking a significant step in the Emirate’s Green Bus Programme. This initiative, led by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), aims to explore sustainable and innovative transportation solutions.

A Milestone for Clean Energy

The first buses were delivered in November 2024, and they will be tested until the end of 2025. The Elec City FC operates on City Route 65, while the Universe FC covers the longer Regional Route 160. These buses are part of a broader effort to assess the viability of hydrogen and electric technologies in Abu Dhabi’s unique environment.

Suliman Al Zaben, Director of Hyundai UAE, emphasized the significance of this development. “We are proud to embark on this transformative journey with ITC towards sustainable and innovative transportation solutions,” he said. This partnership highlights Hyundai’s commitment to clean energy and pioneering technologies.

Comprehensive Green Bus Programme

The Green Bus Programme is designed to evaluate and manage public transport technologies suitable for Abu Dhabi. It aims to identify the best solutions in hydrogen and electric power, ensuring they meet the needs of residents and visitors. The programme also focuses on enhancing local expertise through specialised training and practical experiences abroad.

Training the Next Generation of Experts

A critical component of the programme is the development of Emirati skills in hydrogen and electric vehicle technology. Local professionals will gain hands-on experience and participate in practical training sessions, both locally and internationally. This initiative ensures that Abu Dhabi not only adopts new technologies but also builds a knowledgeable workforce to support them.

The Future of Public Transport in Abu Dhabi

Hyundai’s hydrogen buses offer quick refuelling and long-range capabilities, making them well-suited for Abu Dhabi’s demanding conditions. While the current focus is on hydrogen buses, the programme remains open to various green technologies. The success of this trial could pave the way for a broader adoption of hydrogen-powered transport, setting a precedent for the region.

Suliman Al Zaben concluded, “This collaboration, supported by the visionary leadership of Juma Al Majid, reaffirms our shared dedication to creating a greener, more sustainable future while addressing the needs of Abu Dhabi’s residents and commuters.”
